2022 PROGRAMME
21-29 July
Our plans for the Incontri 2022 festival are well underway, and Artistic Director Alessio Bax has confirmed a fantastic line-up of artists. As the programme details are consolidated, here is what we can share with you for now. As always, for updates, please go to our website
Wind ensemble Les Vents Français with pianist Eric Le Sage has a wealth of eclectic and unusual repertoire in many different instrumental combinations, so we are looking forward to some fun programmes! The individual members of the ensemble (some of whom are already familiar to our audiences) are all formidable artists; oboist François Leleux and bassoonist Gilbert Audin – who will join us for the first time – are already legends on their instruments.
Double bassist Niek De Groot, also debuting at the Incontri, is an extraordinary musician; he plays a gorgeous, rare, Montagnana instrument. We are so delighted to welcome James Ehnes, the internationally celebrated violinist, for his first visit to Incontri, and to see ‘cellist Paul Watkins return, this time additionally taking the role of conductor for our opening concert in Florence on July 21st with the Orchestra della Toscana.
Old and dear friends joining Alessio, Lucille and Antonio include Radovan Vlatković, Lawrence Power, Eric Le Sage, Annabelle Meare, Emmanuel Pahud, Paul Watkins, and Paul Meyer.
OPENING CONCERT 2022
Following the success of the Florence concert in 2021, the 2022 festival will also open in the Tuscan capital, on July 21st (venue to be confirmed) with Paul Watkins conducting the Orchestra della Toscana in a stellar programme:
W. A. Mozart Andante in C, KV 315 soloist Emmanuel Pahud
F. Poulenc Flute Sonata (arr. L. Berkeley) soloist Emmanuel Pahud
F. Poulenc Concerto for two pianos soloists Lucille Chung, Alessio Bax
P. I. Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D, op. 35 soloist James Ehnes
Other Incontri venues will include favourites the La Foce cortile and the Chiarentana cortile. With luck we may even be able to return to some of our beautiful locations around the Val d’Orcia.
PARLANDO 2022
More details of the new writer’s residency will soon be available, but we are in the process of confirming the collaboration of an internationally-recognized author.
INCONTRI FILM
We would like to take this opportunity to direct you to the short film made by filmmaker and producer Zac James Nicholson during the 2021 festival. In ‘Incontri: Musical Encounters in the Val d’Orcia’, Nicholson skillfully and sensitively reveals the sort of inspiring and heartwarming scenes that capture the essence of the unique Incontri experience. The film can be viewed by following this link.
